Stella Luce, a long-beloved underground fixture of the burgeoning art world of Northern Colorado, has emerged into the limelight with their new release, a four song EP, “Caldera,” and thankfully so; it’s time for the world to hear what this act is all about. With more shows, press, and public interface than in years past, the band is embarking on new territory and making serious inroads to gaining new fans and accolade based on a more rock-infused sound. True to the Stella Luce trademark of intricate, twisting and multi-faceted lyrics and melodies, “Caldera” is their strongest installment to date. With the addition of a fourth member this year, guitarist Tim Massa, the band have rounds out their sound considerably, adding balance and depth their signature sound of Eastern European-esque indie rock. The standout on the EP is Alana Rolfe, front woman and the master of the viola melodies. Rolfe’s haunting, ethereal
and mesmerizing vocals, much akin to those of punk/rock artists like Exene Cervenka and Debbie Harry, skip from light and airy to full-bodied and strong, providing punch to messages with shocking soprano soaring above an ever-evolving bed of winding notes. Paired with the intricate sounds of the viola, including moments of soft, skipping plucks to grinding, edgy draws, Rolfe sparks the EP with mystery and a dark vibe that gives “Caldera” breadth. Brett Schreiber on bass and Sean Speer on drums complete the band’s sound with interesting flow and rhythms, and Schreiber also adds effects and mixing/mastering on the band’s self-produced EP.
